Seven feet of concrete separate Steve Costigan from escape, while gamblers crowd above to watch two heavyweight sailors settle a rivalry with bare fists. The pit was built for staged snake fights, not boxing, and its cramped dimensions turn an illegal contest outside Manila into something more dangerous than an ordinary prize fight. Steve tells the tale himself, in a rush of exaggerated sailor slang, comic boasts, malapropisms and self-mocking observations. Heavyweight champion aboard a merchant ship, he meets his rival in Bat Slade, champion of another vessel and a fighter whose evasive skill challenges Steve's faith in raw strength. Masculine pride, romantic competition and shipboard rivalry collide as an unscrupulous promoter converts their antagonism into entertainment for a betting crowd. Beneath the punches, this short work of boxing fiction keeps a sharp eye on deception, gambling and the appetite for violence as spectacle. Its humour comes not from softening the danger, but from filtering it through a sailor-boxer whose bravado remains irrepressible even when the conditions are manifestly unfair. The unusual arena intensifies every feint and blow, while Steve's first-person voice gives the bare-knuckle fight its distinctive comic force. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
